Joseph Hardin Coulombe was an American businessman who founded the grocery store chain, Trader Joe's. He was born on June 3rd, 1930, in San Diego, California and passed away on February 28th, 2020, at the age of 89.
Coulombe graduated from Stanford University in 1952 with a degree in economics and went on to earn an MBA from Stanford Business School. In 1958, he joined the retail chain, Rexall, where he worked as a management trainee.
In 1958, Coulombe opened the first Trader Joe's store in Pasadena, California, offering a selection of high-quality, affordable exotic foods from around the world. The store was an immediate success, and Coulombe soon expanded the chain, which now has over 500 locations across the United States.
Throughout his career, Coulombe was an advocate for customer service, employee satisfaction, and innovation. He was also known for his philanthropic efforts, donating to education and the arts.
Coulombe retired from Trader Joe's in 1988 but remained active in the business community, serving on the board of directors for several companies. He was honored with numerous awards throughout his career, including Retailer of the Year by Food and Drug magazine in 1983, and induction into the California Grocers Association Hall of Achievement in 1990.
